Our second grade students will be making their First Solemn Holy Communion this Saturday at 10:00am. Our first communicants will be invited to wear their special communion clothes each Sunday throughout May. We congratulate and pray for the second graders as they celebrate another milestone on their faith journey. Thank you to our third grade parents for providing the reception in Lanigan Gym immediately following the service.

If you are an Ambassador Family for next school year, please be sure that your new family is aware of the New Family Orientation next Thursday, May 15, beginning at 6:30pm in the school hall. This important meeting will provide an opportunity for our new families to begin feeling connected to our Holy Rosary community.

Special celebrations honoring Mary, our Blessed Mother: On Friday, May 16, our fourth grade students will join fourth graders from each of the Catholic schools in the archdiocese at St. James Cathedral for a special May Crowning led by Archbishop Brunett. On Tuesday, May 20, the seventh graders will form a Living Rosary and lead our student body in saying the rosary. The service will conclude with our eighth grade classes presenting a Liturgical Prayer Movement in honor of Mary. Students must be in perfect uniform on May 20 - thank you! We hope that you can join us for this special celebration - Tuesday, May 20, at 2:00pm in the church.

Happy Mothers Day to all of our wonderful Mothers! Happy Pentecost Day to everyone! May the Holy Spirit touch all of our lives with Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, and Wonder.

We hope to see you tomorrow at our Talent Show - guaranteed FUN for all! There is a notice in this newsletter with further details and times. Congratulation to all our performers - we are proud of you!

Just one final reminder: We need your help! On the days that students have health and fitness, they MUST be wearing tennis shoes with Velcro or shoelaces that are tied. It is unsafe for children to participate in health and fitness class without the proper shoes. Students’ grades will be negatively impacted when they cannot participate. Also, students may NOT wear slipper type shoes to school. Thank you for your cooperation. We appreciate you helping us enforce the Uniform Policy.

This is a city-wide event sponsored by the Cascade Bicycle Club. You can park your bike in the bike rack outside of Mrs. Blanco’s classroom. This is also Bike to Work Day, so parents, after riding the kids to school, you may want to just keep on going! (P.S. Ms. Brown will not be cycling from Green Lake, but from a friend’s home in West Seattle. Ms. Brown would not make it to Holy Rosary from Green Lake!)

Health News

There have several reported cases of head lice within the Holy Rosary School community. The children have been treated, per the Holy Rosary Head lice policy, and have returned back to school. I would like to ask you to use this current head lice out-break to as a reminder to continue to perform weekly scalp checks on your family. I also suggest that during periods when the school is experiencing active cases of head lice that scalp checks be increased to at least three times a week. Below are the instructions on how to perform these checks.

Check your child for signs of head lice in a well-lighted area when the hair is dry. Begin at the nape of the neck and work your way up. Lice and eggs can be anywhere on the head but hey prefer warmer places to hide. The lower hairline is a good place to start. Using either your fingers or a tail comb, slowly part the hair down the middle, from the crown to the nape of the neck. Check the part for the eggs on the hair shaft (small white specks attached to the hair shaft) or adult lice. Note that the eggs will be well attached and should only be able to be removed by scraping off the hair with your fingernail. Once the first section is checked, part the hair either to the left or right of your original part in very small sections Check this new parting for eggs or lice. Repeat this process throughout the entire back of the head, paying extra attention to the warmer spots at the nape, hairline and close to the ears. When the entire back portion of the head is complete, part your child’s hair from the crown to the front hairline and repeat the process for the front of the hair.

Please refer to the “Head Lice Policy” and Treatment Checklist” in your Family Handbook (628k PDF) if nits/lice are found. Contact me or the office with questions regarding school policies. Contact your physicians with any questions regarding specific treatments.
