Thank You from St. Jude

Posted by Mrs. Harris on June 11th, 2008

We received a thank you letter from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Marlo Thomas. Part of the letter reads:

“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the success of your event…The proceeds from your event will help the doctors and researchers at St. Jude in their quest to find cures and save the lives of our precious patients. And events such as the Math-a-thon help fulfill our promise that no child is ever turned away because of a family’s inability to pay.”

So, thanks to all the students and families who raised $5000 for the children at St. Jude.

BOGO (Buy One Get One FREE) Book Fair Returns

Posted by Mrs. Harris on May 24th, 2008

The Scholastic Book Fair returns to HRS with the students’ favorite: BOGO. Everone enjoys getting something for free. Buy one pencil, get a pencil free; buy one book for $3.99 and get a book that costs $3.99 or less for free. Nothing better!

The Scholastic truck will arrive Tuesday morning, May 27 and the fair will be setup as quickly as possible after that. It will remain open during normal school hours from Tuesday, May 27 through the end of school on Monday, June 2.

This BOGO book fair is a service for our families, providing the opportunity to select some entertaining, appropriate summer reading materials or to stockpile exciting birthday gifts. All the profits are returned to the students in free books as a thank you for supporting the other two book fairs. Stop by and see why the students describe this book fair as one of the highlights of the school year.

Report from the Reading Road Trip

Posted by Mrs. Harris on March 2nd, 2008

A talented crew of volunteers transformed the Library into a book browser/shopper paradise, while others cashiered, assisted students, tidied up or packed up when the fair was over. Just like driving on the freeways, sometimes were hectic and other times were calm. On Wednesday, the Grandparents visited HRS see their grandchildren’s classrooms, to eat lunch and to hopefully buy something at the Book Fair. While this day is important financially, it provides another link between the generations - all share the joy of reading. We were fortunate that Clifford the big red dog was able to visit with our students.

I mentioned to some people that the proceeds from the Book Fair are spent to purchase new library resources. The line item in the school budget only covers the circulation software and some necessary supplies. I am happy to report that through our purchases, we raised $2456. These monies will purchase new Everybody and Fiction books as well as new books in the Dewey Sections: 500 (Science), 600 (Applied sciences and technology) 700 (The Arts) as well as additional biographies. We should be able to purchase at least 100 new books.
Thank you, again, for being part of the successful Reading Road Trip.
