Monday letter 5/12/08

Posted by Mrs. Hedman on May 12th, 2008

Dear Parents,

Boy, the months are going faster and faster as we get toward the end of the year. Hopefully you had a lovely mothers day celebration at your house this weekend. We aren’t quite done celebrating here and hope to see all of you at our prayer service Friday morning. Also congratulations to all our kindergarten talent show stars. It was a lot of fun to see you shine like the stars that you are! TOMORROW is the 4th grade bake sale to benefit Mercy Corps.. Prices start at 10 cents. (a dollar is too much to send) There are many items for a quarter so 50 to 75 cents is plenty. For those that have allergies there is a separate table of goodies not made with peanuts or milk.
Like we said earlier, it is our turn to do the prayer service this week. We will honor Mary and you, our mothers. Please have your child in the classroom on Friday promptly at 8:15 so we can go directly to the school hall. The prayer service starts at 8:30 and all children must be in perfect uniform. One last quick reminder to have your child bring one flower on Friday for this prayer service. We hope to see all you moms there!
We are coming to the end of the year and have a lot of things we need to finish up. I hope we are all finally healthy and back in school. This has been a tough cold and flu season. Have a great week!

Dear Parents,
Finally a beautiful spring weekend day, what a treat! We are in the middle of our ITBS testing and it is going well. Thanks for making sure that the kids are well rested and have a healthy snack.
We have attached two permission slips to this letter one is for a field day a PE field trip to Hiawatha and the other is for a field trip to the Odyssey Maritime Museum. Please fill these out and return them as soon as possible. Field day is free and the museum is $4.50 /child (adults are free).
Friday is a half- day (for real this time) due to both the auction and a teacher in-service. Thank you to all of our parents that have worked so hard on our auction project. It will be exciting to see who gets to take it home from the auction on Saturday night.
We have had quite a few issues with toys from home, so we are asking that all toys other than (balls and jump ropes) be left at home. KB will have a substitute Thursday, Friday and Monday, and so that you can plan ahead kindergarten graduation will take place the morning of June sixth. This is the last day of school for our kids, although the rest of the Holy Rosary students will go into the following week. Have a good week.

Dear Parents,
We are now well into our first week of April. How time flies. This Wednesday we will be starting the ITBS testing for kindergarten. Remember to get to bed early and have a good breakfast. We did some practice tests today so we can learn how to fill in the bubbles and take special directions. All the children did a great job.
If you have not returned the report card envelope can you please send those in your child’s folder? You are welcome to keep the report card. We just need to reuse the envelopes. Thanks so much.
KA and KB will be doing an all class act in the talent show so I am sure you will be hearing about that. If your child has decided to do an individual act that is great! They will get two chances to entertain our school. Please check the FCE for permission slip turn in times. No permission is needed for the class act.
All the transportation projects have been in the main hall for display. We have heard wonderful compliments about them all. All of the projects were very well done. Please pick these up after school on Friday and take them home.
Don’t forget that we have a half day on Wednesday so that all the teachers can attend an important in-service required by the Archdiocese. Have a good week.

Monday Letter 3-10-08

Posted by Mrs. Hedman on March 11th, 2008

Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are already into the second week in March. We have several important announcements. Wednesday is the day we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year. Everyone may wear green, but not face paint or wild hats. We will also be attending mass in the morning. This is an all school mass. Next Monday, March 17th (the real St. Patrick’s day) we will be attending the daily mass. This is just KA and KB Mass starts at 8:00. Please come with your child to this mass.
We still need boxes or household objects of any kind for our leprechaun trap making tomorrow.
We are going on the field trip Thursday the 13th. Drivers please arrive by 10:30 so we can get to the theater by 11:15 It is very important that every child has a car seat for the field trip. If you are not driving make sure that you drop off your child’s car seat with them on Thursday morning. No child can go on the field trip without a car seat. Those who do not have their permission slips or money in please make sure they are in ASAP. We cannot take your child with us if there is no permission slip. Thanks so much.
The kids are thirsty! Remember that we do not have a drinking fountain down in the basement so please, please, please send your child with a water bottle. Also, snack time is very important to all the children. So make sure to send a healthy snack with your child (we are out of extra ones).
Welcome to Kamila Kennedy, the new KA assistant. Please take a minute to introduce yourself to her. We are thrilled to have her. And one more reminder- the transportation projects are due a week from Wednesday.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to March! The time is just flying by. I hope all of you are well into your transportation projects. For those you in KA that have had trouble locating the link on the KA website, please go to KB and look under homework, then click on transportation. We are looking forward to seeing all these projects turned in on March 19. The vehicles will be on display upstairs in the main hallway.
St. Patrick’s day is coming early to Holy Rosary. We will be celebrating on March 12, and children may wear green but no face paint or hair color because we will be going to mass. Historically in kindergarten the leprechaun has come and created mischief during the beginning of March. We will be making and setting traps so please start sending in any recyclables that could be used to catch a leprechaun. (Example… paper towel rolls, boxes, straws, cups, etc.). It should be fun!!
This week we are starting a two week unit on Dr. Suess. If your child wants to bring in one of your Dr. Suess books to share this is fine, just please make sure they are labeled with his or her name.
Reminders We could still use a few drivers for our field trip to see the Three little pigs on March 13. No school this Friday, March 7 due to kindergarten testing. No school on Friday March 14 due to teachers inservice.

Posted by Mrs. Hedman on February 27th, 2008

Dear Parents,
Happy Monday! It was so nice to have another sunny weekend. We are beginning a transportation unit this week that will last through March. On the KA (it should be posted by this afternoon, otherwise check the KB site, they are the same) and KB webpages you will find a homework tab that has a transportation webquest. This is an online learning adventure for you to explore with your child. There are several activities contained within this webquest that you will need to do with your child. For example, you will need to take a short trip on a bus, ferry or some other form of transportation and then create a journal page detailing that trip. There is also a task where the children make their own vehicle. These activities will require help from you. The projects are due on March 19th so there is plenty of time to carefully complete the tasks, but we do encourage you to get started soon.
Also, we are headed out on our first field trip of the year. We are going to the Highline Performing arts center to see a Story Book Theater Presentation of the Three Little pigs on March 13th. We can only take 10 chaperones from each class so please check your calendars and return the permission slips ASAP. The cost is $7.00/person. We will leave around 10:30 and be back by 1:00.
Thank you for sending in an extra lunch for the St. Martin De Porres Men on Friday! Have a good week!

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful Catholic Schools Week, but we are looking forward to a much more normal week. Wednesday we will be going to mass for Ash Wednesday. Please remember to send your child in perfect uniform that day. Thank you for sending in all the socks and underwear for the clothes line. Later this week we plan to deliver them with our eighth grade buddies.

Looking ahead we will be having a Valentines day party on the 14th, thank you room moms. Please have a valentine for everyone, please do not fill out the “TO” part, because it is so hard for the kids to read all the names. The 100th day of school will be on Wednesday the 20th. Please help your child put together a collection of 100 items. Something small is probably best. This is due on the 19th.

Monday Letter 12/10/07

Posted by Mrs. Hedman on December 10th, 2007

Dear Parents,
2007 is quickly winding down. The children did such a nice job on their performance last Thursday night. It was fun to see them all dressed up. If you have any pictures from that night will you please email them to one of us. We would love to have some on hand. This week we are getting ready for Christmas and winding up our projects. We will be going to mass this Wednesday Dec 12, 2007. This will be a perfect uniform day.
DATES TO REMEMBER: The kindergarteners and 8th graders will be making their gingerbread houses Monday the 17th. The following day Tuesday the 18th all parents are invited to a special Advent party. We will be having cocoa, making advent wreaths, and sharing a special book the kids have been working on. This will be at 10:00.
PRAYER PARTNERS: AS you know, each child has been given a prayer partner from their faith family. They should be praying for them during this advent season. They are to make a card for this person. We will be giving them this card at our faith family meeting next week. I believe it was reported that kindergarteners would be making this card at school, however we would like the children to do this at home. This week’s homework will be to make this card. The card is to be made with special love and care. Please help them with the writing. Have a wonderful week.

Can you believe all this rain? I hope you are dry and well. Thank you for helping the kids finish the gingerbread men, they are fabulous. You can stop by and see them on our kindergarten bulletin board.

Thursday is the Christmas show. The children should come in their Sunday best clothing. Their song is this week’s homework. The kids know the tune, but we would like you to practice, practice, practice with them.

Tomorrow we are meeting with our faith families. We will be drawing prayer partners. Your child will pray for their partner during advent. As kindergarteners we will make our cards together in class so this does not need to be does not need to be done at home.

We are in need of green play dough for a special project. If you have time can you please make a batch and send it in. The recipe is quite simple. Materials Needed:
• 1 Cup Flour
• 1/2 Cup Salt
• 2 Tbsp Oil
• 2 Tsp Cream of Tartar
• 1 Cup Water
• green Food Coloring
Instructions:
Heat the oil in a pot. Remove from heat and stir in all other ingredients (use food coloring if desired). Continue to cook over low heat until mixture is firm and forms a ball (about 4-5 minutes). Remove from heat, set clay mixture on wax paper, and let cool. Thank you so much for helping us out in this way.

Don’t forget to send in the candy and frosting. Many of you have already sent these items in which we so appreciate. Have a wonderful week!

Monday Letter 11/26/07

Posted by Mrs. Hedman on November 26th, 2007

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope that all your Thanksgiving breaks were good. We want to send out a special thank you to all the parents that helped put our Thanksgiving feast together. It was such a nice culmination to our Thanksgiving unit.
It is hard to believe that we are closing in on the month of December already. During the month of December one of the books we will be reading is the Gingerbread. So our homework this week is to decorate the brown Gingerbread man we are sending home. Please be creative! These will be displayed up in our kindergarten hall so use glitter, material, candies, buttons, etc. We are giving the kindergarteners a week to make these special.
December is very busy. Here are some of the highlights so you can mark your calendars. This Sunday will be the first week of Advent so we are already beginning our Advent study. You are invited to a special Advent celebration on December 18th at 10:00. The children are preparing a nice surprise for you so hopefully you will be able to attend. The Christmas music program will be December 11th and we will break for the holiday on the 19th. We will also be decorating gingerbread houses with our eighth grade buddies. To help out with this project, please send in one can of vanilla frosting and a bag of candy. I am not certain of the exact date for this project, but you can send in these items any time. We pool all of the treats and the children always create the most adorable houses. Due to all the craziness of the season, we will not need volunteers, however, the sign ups will be available so if you are free you can help in January.
One other quick note, it is very cold outside and the kids go out to play 3 times a day. So please send a coat and for the girls it might be a good idea to wear tights or pants. Thanks for your help!
