Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

Can you believe June is already here?! As we enter our last full week of school, we are busy completing a few different projects. In the midst of learning, we are also trying to take care of some end-of-the-year details. Here are a few reminders for you:

Library books: Please make sure your child returns all books to the Holy Rosary library this week. Report cards cannot be released until these are returned or replaced.

The eighth graders will graduate at 7:00 pm on Thursday evening.

Summer Reading Skills Club: Ms. Corrigan and Mrs. Morris are offering small group reading instruction and skills practice this summer to help students avoid the “summer slide.” Students who will be entering grades 3, 4, or 5 in the fall are eligible to participate. All reading levels and abilities are welcome: we will provide different activities for the varying levels of reading proficiency. The club will meet on four Tuesday mornings in July (8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th). Sessions will focus on building vocabulary and decoding skills, applying comprehension strategies and improving fluency. Students will be engaged in hands-on activities, games, literature circles and more! Each child will also receive take-home practice activities to use throughout the summer. The cost is $30 per day or $100 for the entire series. Registration forms were sent out with today’s FCE. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Corrigan at mcorrigan@holyrosaryws.org. Thanks!

Multiplication This Thursday, I am planning to have the multiplication party to celebrate all students passing their timed tests. If your child still has tests to pass, please have them study this week. I will be available during all morning recess to give timed tiests. I will send home some timed test practice sheets for them. I am so proud of all the students’ effort to learn their facts!

Special Summer Writing Fun: I would like to invite all third graders to participate in our Summer Fun Pen-Pal Program. It is a fun way to keep in touch with your friends and also to practice your writing skills. It’s going to be great!

This week, we will be learning:

Math: We review for the final exam on Wednesday. These will be returned next week. The results of this test will give you a clear idea of specific areas your child will need to review this summer.

Reading: We read an Indian Mathematical Folktale called ”One Grain of Rice.” It tells the story of a wise girl who out wits a raja with her mathematical skills. The target skill is compare and contrast. Students compare how the characters views are similar and different.

Oral Book Reports: Some of these were presented today and they were fantastic! Students are being assessed using the rubric, which was sent home with the original assignment. We are looking forward to the rest of the presentations.

Science: Students learn how living things make and use sound.

Religion: Health and Safety: These next two weeks we will be discussing health and safety using the archdiocese required curriculum. This week we cover touching safety, seeking appropriate support when needed and being assertive when encountering bullying behavior.

Social Studies: Students continue to learn about the economy. We discuss particular economic scenarios and students decide if prices change. We review the concepts of supply and demand.

Language Arts: Students continue writing their plays, and make final finishing touches on them. We review the correct format for writing friendly letters. We work on writing letters to next year’s teacher.

Spelling: There will be a spelling assignment due Thursday. The test will be on Friday.
Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Linda Narquis
