Dear Third Grade Parents and Students,

Halloween Party:  Mark your calendars for Friday, October 31st, if you are interested in helping out with the 3A Halloween party.  Our party will be from 1:15-2:00.  You are welcome to join us.

Half-day Wednesday:  There will be a half-day on Wednesday due to a teachers’ in-service on curriculum mapping. Please plan accordingly.

Library Tuesday:  Due to our half-day on Wednesday, students will have their library time on Tuesday.  We will not have library on Wednesday.  Please remind your students to bring in their books by Tuesday if they want new books.

Drugs are Scary Poster: Your child should be working on this poster at home.  It is a Halloween-themed poster showing how “Drugs are Scary!”  These posters are due Thursday, October 9th.  The top 3 winning posters will be displayed at the Jefferson Square Safeway!  The rest of the posters will be displayed around school.  They should do their best work on these posters.  I’m looking forward to seeing how creative they are!

We’ve got some interesting things going on this week:

Math:              Students review subtraction strategies. Please practice addition and subtraction flashcards each night, as there will be no nightly math worksheet this week.

Simple Solutions lessons 6-9 will be due this Thursday.

Reading:  Students will be reading The Wednesday Surprise at home and doing a book report and creative project, which will be completed as homework (see separate instructions).  We have discussed the project in class, and talked about the importance of doing a little bit each night, as opposed to saving the whole thing for the last night.  This will be a good opportunity for the children to practice their time management skills. If your child needs any additional assistance from me on this project, please let me know; I am happy to help.  This project is due next Monday, October 13th

We begin reading our first novel as a class this week.  We read The Boxcar Children #1. We will focus on the skills of sequencing, character analysis, and setting.  Students will practice oral reading skills through echo reading, partner reading and a reader’s theater approach.  This is a fun story and one of which I’m sure most students will enjoy!

Language Arts:  We continue to practice writing descriptively.  Students begin a free verse leaf poem, which describes fall. They incorporate all of the senses to help paint a picture for our minds.  These will be presented at conference time.  The students are getting very skilled in including vivid adjectives in their writing.

Spelling:  Test on Friday.   The assignment is due Thursday. This week we focus on comparative and superlative adjectives, and y to i rule.

Science: We continue to measure and record the growth of our plants.  The children are in awe about how fast our plants are growing!  We are excited to see how big they get.  They will also be observing the leaves and the buds on their plants and drawing a scientific picture of each.

Social Studies:  Students begin working on a map of the classroom.  They practice their understanding of cardinal and intermediate directions by writing the directional relationship of objects in the classroom.

Religion: We continue reading Chapter 3 in our books.  A copy of the Angel of God prayer was given to the students.  They are responsible for learning and memorizing this poem by Oct. 20.  They will be asked to recite it to me.

This week’s star:  Eamon

Next week’s star:  Jaxon

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely.
